“The Road to Emancipation” series begins June 14

The Clarksville Arts & Heritage Council, Clarksville Parks & Recreation and Mt. Olive Cemetery Historical Preservation Society will begin their three-part educational series, “The Road to Emancipation,” on Sunday, June 14, at 2 p.m. at the L&N Depot, 108 South 10th Street, Clarksville.

Presented as part of Clarksville-Montgomery County’s celebration of America’s 250th Birthday, the series explores African American experiences and contributions that helped shape both local and national history.

The opening program, “The Clarksville Contraband Camp: Uncovering a Landscape of Freedom,” will be presented by local historian David Britton.

During the American Civil War, thousands of enslaved African Americans sought refuge behind Union lines, including many who came to Clarksville in search of U.S. Army protection. These refugees, often referred to as “contrabands,” found shelter in government-sponsored camps established throughout the South.

Britton’s presentation will examine the location and significance of the Clarksville Contraband Camp and explore how the settlement became the foundation of Clarksville’s modern Black community. Through historical research and documentation, attendees will gain insight into a pivotal chapter of local history and the remarkable stories of people who pursued freedom amid the turmoil of war.

“The Road to Emancipation” is designed to highlight the courage, resilience, and contributions of African Americans throughout American history while encouraging a deeper understanding of Clarksville’s unique heritage.

The June 14 presentation is free and open to the public. Community members of all ages are invited to attend.

Additional programs in the series will be held on July 19 and August 9, each focusing on different aspects of African American history and culture.
